Highgate School

Cyprus

Highgate was founded in 1991. We are located in a green and quiet area, ten minutes outside the main city of Nicosia, in Cyprus. In this safe and beautiful surroundings we cater for children from the age of two all the way to eighteen. Our children come from many countries, giving the school a cultural mix which reflects the world in which we live. Its vision is that every member of the school community must have the opportunity to learn, to acknowledge, understand and celebrate their own and other’s abilities, cultural religions and traditions. We encourage respect and tolerance of all cultures, and promote an awareness and acceptance of commonality and diversity within our school. The curriculum reflects the cultural diversity to which pupils belong and of which they will become adult members. It is our priority that all pupils are given the opportunity to recognize the equality, worth and dignity of people from their own and other cultures through a broad and balanced curriculum. We endeavour to foster a sensitive, informed attitude amongst our pupils, creating a caring atmosphere in which diversity and commonality of cultural beliefs, traditions and values are explored. We believe that an intercultural education is valuable to all children in equipping them to participate in an increasingly diverse society. The last five years, we participated in one Comenius project, three Erasmus+ KA2 projects and one Erasmus+ KA1 project, where we had the opportunity to meet and work with teachers and students from many different European countries as Spain, Turkey, Romania, England, Estonia, Germany, France, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Bulgaria, Latvia and Poland.

CPR Plurilingüe Nuestra Señora del Carmen - Atocha Betanzos

Spain

CPR Plurilingüe Nuestra Sra del Carmen is a small school with 30 teachers and 353 students (from 3 to 18 years old) situated in Betanzos, a small village of around 13000 inhabitants in Galicia (north-west of Spain). Our students´ families backgrounds are low/medium class, and their average educational level is also medium-low. Our students´ average economic level used to be medium, but because of the crisis our country has been suffering for the last 5 years, we have now lots of families with a big number of unemployed parents, which has had a consequent negative influence on our students´motivation: they cannot see a clear future for themselves, dramatically aggravated by the high rates of youth unemployment our country is suffering from.  For our situation, the school has a few opportunities of collaborating with other European schools, and we firmly believe the participation of our institution in this kind of projects can positively influence both on the school´s prestige, and on our children´s motivation: sharing experiences with other European schools, living other students´ realities in other European countries, and most of all through collaborative work. Our school has been working hard trying to establish this innovative way of work: collaborative work. We have recently become a “multilingual” school, working with CLIL system. Although we are a small school, our staff is really hard-working; most of all to get all the best for our students, our final goal.
