You don’t have to be a science geek to love the Exploratorium. Housed in the Palace of Fine Arts, the building was built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. Today it’s a giant playground for kids and adults. Exhibits revolve around sight, the human mind, forces in our world, and listening—and encourage visitors to learn by doing, instead of just bombarding them with information. The Tactile Dome, where you find your way around in complete darkness by relying on your sense of touch, is a popular attraction. The museum charges a bit extra for this exhibit, but it’s a worthwhile experience. Stop by the café if all the brain stimulation kick-starts your appetite—the food is delicious and many options are good for you too.
