Place overview

El Capitan Theatre shows feature-length films, preceded by live singing and dancing performances. Originally coined a “movie palace,” this Disney-owned theater is as much about the experience of going to the movies as it is about the movie itself. The theatre opened in 1926 and called itself “Hollywood’s First Home of Spoken Drama.” In 1941, Citizen Kane had its world premiere here. The Walt Disney Company bought the theater in 1989, and several years later closed it for remodeling. It re-opened in 1991 to screen the premiere of The Rocketeer.
