Nestled into Bolton Canyon, the Hollywood Bowl is one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world. Host to open-air concerts, special movie screenings, and the annual Playboy Jazz Festival, it can accommodate just under 18,000 spectators. The first concert under the stars took place in 1922, when the Los Angeles Philharmonic inaugurated its first season. The site is also sometimes used for community purposes, such as commencement ceremonies for Hollywood High School and other educational institutions. While most performances take place at night, the facility is open during the day for passers-bys to get a peek at the impressive outdoor auditorium.
