Place overview

A historic celebration of Mexican heritage, Olvera Street pays homage to the colorful village originally founded in this spot in 1781. The settlers who came from Mexico helped shape the identity of Los Angeles. The 27 historic buildings (including the oldest house in Los Angeles) are now home to shops selling Mexican crafts and restaurants serving enchiladas, margaritas, and other Mexican specialties. Strolling mariachis set a festive mood along the street, while folkloric dance performances take place in a Mexican-style plaza on the weekends. Keep an eye open for murals created by local artists on the sides of buildings.
